Designing Displays Simply and Elegantly
Linc Mitchell, EVP of Enterprise Technologies for VNI Media summarizes why JavaFX was chosen for their Velocast® Cinema Signage: "JavaFX is an ideal platform for the Velocast® solution for a number of reasons, including its rich client capabilities. For example, each Velocast® screen configuration must display its media-rich content autonomously, contacting the server periodically for content and software updates. Also, the declarative and simple nature of JavaFX makes it conducive to prototyping and rapid development. In our experience, a JavaFX rich-client can be created in much less time than a similar HTML or Java technology-based application, while enhancing the user's experience."
The unique binding and timeline capabilities of the JavaFX language give VNI Media a high degree of flexibility when designing how to trigger transitions between different displays, as well as the activation of videos that are part of those displays. For example:
- The Box Office component of the cinema solution is able to construct a table of movies and show times from a dynamically constructed sequence of movies and times.
- The HDPoster solution wraps video "posters" in custom nodes and controls transition between those nodes with both a timeline and user interaction.
- The Concessions Menu features JavaFX applets containing the candy and combo carousels, with a separate JavaFX application overlay displaying Velocast® advertisements and animated popcorn (featuring a Java physics engine) on top of the concession menu.
